Family-fun San Antonio

February 2020 - Minnesota has had a mild winter this year but we wanted to escape the cold temps for a few days with some warmer weather. San Antonio was a great choice for us. Texas in February is not too hot but a very nice 65 - 70 degrees.

The Alamo

The Alamo

Of course the main reason to go to San Antonio is to visit the Alamo. It really took me awhile to learn the importance of the Alamo because it has a complicated history.

It is first a church, one of the missions built in the 1700's by Spain to spread the Catholic religion. In the 1800's it was abandoned by the church and then taken over as a military post.

There are different tour options available. We chose to just go through the Alamo on our own (for free!) and read the signs along the way. I'm sure we missed out on some great stories, though, without a guide.

Outside the Alamo there is a courtyard with a gift shop building and an area with a continuous movie telling the history of the Alamo.

It was nice to see captions continually shown during the movie. It helps many people learn the story whether they can hear the audio or not.

The Riverwalk

Night and day you can see the boats that move along the river. We took a ride on the GoRio tour boat with narration provided by the knowledgeable captain. At night we saw people dining on the boats as they travel along.

Our favorite restaurant on the river was Casa Rio. Great food and very reasonable prices.
